Sunday Service: “Loss and Grief”

Sunday Service: "Loss and Grief"

I answer the heroic question ‘Death, where is thy sting?’ with
‘It is here in my heart and mind and memories.’

From: Maya Angelou, “When I Think of Death”

This Sunday, January 16th, we continue with our theme of Mental Health with a focus on Loss and Grief. Everyone has been touched by loss in some way. We have lost beloved grandparents or parents. Some of us have lost children. Others of us have lost beloved pets, family homes, farms, and jobs we loved. Loss is a part of Life. We all will deal with it many times in our lives. Join us this Sunday on Zoom.

The service will include a Story for All Ages that addresses loss, in terms appropriate for children, followed by a discussion led by Rev. Jim. It would be wonderful to have as many children as possible present for at least that portion of the service. In addition, there will be another fun RE class via Zoom immediately following the service, around 11:30-11:45am. Look for details in this week’s Order of Service.

Small Group Ministry (Chalice Circles) @ Zoom Only

In January, we are restarting Small Group Ministry, otherwise known as Chalice Circles or Covenant Groups.

Each month we will focus on a different theme chosen by our partner, Soul Matters. January’s theme is “Intention.” Members will review the monthly packet beforehand and reflect on the readings and questions. (To access the monthly packet for January, go to berrienuu.org/Fellowship Resources and click on “Small Group Ministry Jan 2022” to download the packet.) In small group meetings, we’ll discuss our reflections in a series of discussion rounds. Unlike other discussion groups, in Chalice Circles we do not engage in cross-talk or debate particular points of view. Instead, we each share our reflections and honor one another through focused listening. More details on this unique discussion approach can be found in the Participant Guide.

If you’d like to get to know your fellow BUUFers better in a more informal environment, build connections and explore your spirituality, Small Group Ministry is a great opportunity to do so. You will be encouraged to attend the same discussion group monthly so that deep connections can be formed. Please Note: These are initial meeting times but they can be scheduled differently if another day and time works better for group members. Also, in-person meetings may temporarily switch to virtual meetings if required by the pandemic or member request. If you are interested but neither meeting time works for you, please contact Interim DRE Joanne Krettek to see if alternative arrangements can be made: dre@berrienuu.org.

Sunday Service: “Addiction, Shame, and Despair, All Fruits of the Same Tree”
Jan 23 @ 10:30 am – 11:45 am
Sunday Service: "Addiction, Shame, and Despair, All Fruits of the Same Tree"

“What is addiction, really? It is a sign, a signal,
a symptom of distress. It is a language that tells us
about a plight that must be understood.”

– Alice Miller

This Sunday, January 23rd, we continue with our monthly theme of Mental Health by focusing on addiction and despair. In a message titled: “Addiction, Shame, and Despair, All Fruits of the Same Tree” Beth La Fleur, Brett Maccani, Terra Lenox, and Rev. Jim McConnell will share their perspectives. Additionally, Helena La Fleur will show a video, she created herself, that demonstrates different ways to be kind. The Story For All Ages will address what it is like to be a child whose parents are recovering from addiction, and, as usual, there will a lot of great music.
Join on Zoom for this important service.
Note: There will be no RE class over Zoom this Sunday. Instead, we’ll be planning a winter outing for families and children. Stay tuned for details!

Prepare and Serve Lunch at Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen @ Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen
Feb 5 @ 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Berrien UU  Fellowship serves lunch at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen the first Saturday of every even-numbered month (February, April, June, August, October and December). Berrien UU volunteers prepare the meal, greet guests and help clean up the kitchen. This is a terrific opportunity to serve the greater community, support our Social Justice mission and enjoy the company of fellow BUUFers and guests at the kitchen. Rev. Jim McConnell generously leads the group in planning the meal and dessert and he will gladly find a role for all volunteers, whether they’ve helped dozens of times or this is their first time. Please consider coming to the Soup Kitchen to help, even if it’s only for an hour or two.

The Soup Kitchen is located at 233 Michigan Street in Benton Harbor.
