The next film in our Environmental Justice Film Series will be shown on Thursday, January 17 at 7:00 PM. (2016). A PLASTIC OCEAN begins when journalist Craig Leeson, searching for the elusive blue whale, discovers plastic waste in what should be pristine ocean. In this adventure documentary, Craig teams up with free diver Tanya Streeter and an international team of scientists and researchers, and they travel to twenty locations around the world over the next four years to explore the fragile state of our oceans, uncover alarming truths about plastic pollution, and reveal working solutions that can be put into immediate effect. The film is 102 minutes, and after we watch it, we’ll discuss what actions we can take on this and other environmental justice issues.
This event is hosted by Berrien UU Board Member Harvey Johnson and is free and open to the public. Free popcorn is included; BYOB encouraged. Doors open at 6:30 PM, so come early, get yourself settled and enjoy some popcorn before the show begins at 7:00!
Mindfulness Workshop Series: Labyrinths as a Meditative Tool
January 19th from 1-3pm
Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is excited to announce our next Mindfulness Workshop: Labyrinths as a Meditative Tool. Learn about Labyrinths and all the ways to interact with one: walking, gazing, sitting, even yoga-based dancing. We will use a variety of patterns and even make our own. All abilities are welcome. Our workshop presenter, Joan Guilfoyle, is certified by the Wisdom Ways Center for Spirituality in labyrinth facilitation. She has led workshops and retreats around the country, and for The Labyrinth Society’s annual gatherings since 2003. We wholeheartedly invite you to come and enjoy an afternoon of spiritual exploration, music and fun.
This event is free and open to the public. Donations for supplies are gratefully accepted.
The January Parents’ Night Out has been postponed to Saturday, January 19. Parents are invited to bring their children to Berrien UU Fellowship at 5:30 PM, where they will eat a healthy meal and engage in fun, kid-friendly activities. Lisa Fuller (BUUF President), Rev. Jim McConnell and others will be providing child care. Meanwhile, parents can get together at Haymarket Brewery in Bridgman. Enjoy this opportunity for a relaxing, child-free evening with other BUUF parents.
We invite you to join us on Wednesday, January 23rd from 7-9pm for our lively Creative Conversations with potluck snacks and BYOB. This month’s guest hosts, Beth and David LaFleur, will help us improve ourselves with new ideas for New Year’s Resolutions. We’ll be watching a few short Ted Talks and have vigorous conversation. Why not break the rut this year? Try a new fun, creative, interesting resolution.
Berrien UU Fellowship is planning to release an informational video to introduce ourselves, our faith and our practices to potential visitors and/or any curious community members. The plan is to unveil this video at BUUF’s 60th Anniversary Celebration on April 27th. With that in mind, Rev. Jim McConnell is hosting a brainstorming session at 5:30 on Friday evening, pizza included. The goal of the meeting will be to put together a rough script and have a little fun while doing it. Below is a link to an example video created by the UUA.
