Creative Conversations

Please join us for some Creative Conversations at BUUF on Wednesday, June 21, from 7 – 9 PM when we’ll begin the evening listening to a TED Talk by Robert Sapolsky titled The biology of our best and worst selves. How can humans be so compassionate and altruistic — and also so brutal and violent? To understand why we do what we do, neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky looks at extreme context, examining actions on timescales from seconds to millions of years before they occurred. In this fascinating talk, he shares his cutting edge research into the biology that drives our worst and best behaviors.

TERRA tells the story of life. Yann Arthus Bertrand and Michael Pitiot reveal the incredible saga of our living planet. From the first lichen to the gigantic forests, monkeys of the jungle to the mythic animals of the savannah. Over barely 10,000 years, life on Earth has been profoundly affected by the incredible development of humanity. But mankind is now increasingly isolated. How have our relations with other living beings changed so much? What do we still see, or notice, of the living world around us? TERRA is a journey through the history of life forms, a quest for the animal within us. For true humanity. By proposing that we once again treat wildlife with the respect it deserves, TERRA shows its credentials as an ode to the human species, a humanist and deliberately positive film, openly advocating that humanity is still capable of “getting back to basics”. The movie is about 90 min. long, and after we watch it we’ll have a discussion about what actions we can all take on this important issue.

BUUF through the Green Sanctuary Team has agreed to provide volunteers to assist with the Fresh Start Children’s Garden in Benton Harbor.  The neighborhood children’s garden, has been led by Emma Kinnard for more than 10 years.  The garden is located at the corner of May and Pearl Streets in Benton Harbor (1104 Pearl Street).  The garden has been cleared of last years material.  Volunteers are needed to dig some paths and lay out the plots of vegetable rows. Come for 5 minutes or come for an hour, but come help create the 2017 Fresh Start Children’s garden.  Come and visit even if you are not able to assist.  If you would like to help or visit another time contact Harvey at 269-470-1470.  He has a key.
