Seeing Economically Distressed Communities Through a New Lens
The St. Joseph Community Forum for Economic Justice is holding a one evening book study on Having Nothing, Possessing Everything. On March 21st, 7:00pm, author Reverend Mike Mather will lay out his vision for working with communities to bring forth their own creativity, imagination, and industry. The meeting will be on Zoom.
Rev. Mike is currently pastor of First United Methodist Church in Boulder, Colorado. He served Broadway United Methodist church in South Bend during the 1990s and early 2000’s.
“If you work for social and economic justice, are a community counselor, a teacher, or just anyone who works with people, Rev. Mike’s book, Having Nothing, Possessing Everything is a must read.
So often our models for helping are something of a one-way street: We give and they receive. In his little treasure of a book, Rev. Mike shares his vision in story and example of how the greatest gifts come when we become a catalyst that allows everyone to realize their own talents, gifts, and passions.” Rev. Jim McConnell, St. Joseph Community Forum for Economic Justice

Our monthly potluck will be on Friday, March 31st at BUUF. The dinner will start at 6PM as usual, not 6:30. We are very happy to be able to share the evening with the leaders and participants of the Hebrew Teachings group. If you are not interested in staying for the whole evening, that is fine. Please join us for dinner anyway. Italian Fare is the cuisine for the evening, please bring your favorite vegetarian or vegan Italian dish to pass…..this includes entres, salads, dessert, soup or bread! If you are in a rush and don’t have time to cook….come anyway.

The eight-session “Wisdom from the Hebrew Scriptures” multigenerational workshop will take place on the third Friday of every month from 6:30-8:00pm. The first session will be conducted on Friday, October 21st inside the BUUF Sanctuary.
This will be a fun, relaxed workshop led by our beloved minister, Rev. Jim McConnell, with assistance from Brett Maccani, DRE and former DRE Joanne Krettek. In each session, we will review and discuss a particular story from the Hebrew Scriptures. The first session will focus on David & Goliath, with a theme of “courage.” Courage also happens to be our Sunday services theme this month.
Activities and discussions will be appropriate to all age groups. During the breakout group activities, you will have a choice of analyzing the story through discussion, dramatizing a modern-day David & Goliath story or making stone art with the theme of “five things that will give me courage.”
All BUUFers are invited to attend. Please feel free to invite friends and family members to participate as well.
BUUFers prepare and serve lunch at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen.
Berrien UU Fellowship serves lunch at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen the first Saturday of every even-numbered month (February, April, June, August, October and December). Berrien UU volunteers prepare the meal, greet guests and help clean up the kitchen. This is a terrific opportunity to serve the greater community, support our Social Justice mission and enjoy the company of fellow BUUFers and guests at the kitchen. Rev. Jim McConnell generously leads the group in planning the meal and dessert and he will gladly find a role for all volunteers, whether they’ve helped dozens of times or this is their first time. Please consider coming to the Soup Kitchen to help, even if it’s only for an hour or two.
The Soup Kitchen is located at 233 Michigan Street in Benton Harbor.
