This Sunday, September 26th, our beloved Minister Emeritus, Roger Brewin, will bring us a message on the widespread practice of banning books. Additionally, we will have a story for the young ones, read from a book banned in 1988 in Colorado, lots of great music, and, as usual, the healing joy of fellowship. Join in person or on Zoom.

Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels spoke at the event, telling the students, “You do well at this late hour to entrust to the flames the intellectual garbage of the past.” (Courtesy U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum/U.S. National Archives and Records Administration)
The next Social Justice Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29, at 7:00 pm via Zoom.
The meeting agenda will include the following topics.
- Developing ways to keep BUUF members informed of volunteer opportunities with the social service agencies we support.
- Scheduling committee and/or congregational conversations with the social service agencies we support.
- Ways that our committee can collaborate with the BUUF Welcoming Congregation program and with the BUUF Green Sanctuary Committee.
- Participating in Sunday services by calling attention to contemporary social justice issues and celebrating historic leaders and events in the ongoing movements for social justice.
Please contact Clark or Nancy Gilpin if you would like to join the meeting.

The Ethical Eating Group monthly pitch-in dinner date has been changed to Thursday, Sept. 30th at 6:00pm at BUUF. There will not be an environmental film following the meal this month. Please bring a vegan or vegetarian dish to pass. We will plan on eating outside due to Covid restrictions as long as the weather is agreeable.
BUUFers prepare and serve lunch at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen.
Berrien UU Fellowship serves lunch at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen the first Saturday of every even-numbered month (February, April, June, August, October and December). Berrien UU volunteers prepare the meal, greet guests and help clean up the kitchen. This is a terrific opportunity to serve the greater community, support our Social Justice mission and enjoy the company of fellow BUUFers and guests at the kitchen. Rev. Jim McConnell generously leads the group in planning the meal and dessert and he will gladly find a role for all volunteers, whether they’ve helped dozens of times or this is their first time. Please consider coming to the Soup Kitchen to help, even if it’s only for an hour or two.
The Soup Kitchen is located at 233 Michigan Street in Benton Harbor.

This Sunday October 3rd is a special Intergenerational service (for both children and adults). We will be examining the life of Gandhi and how he influenced the way we think about non-violent protest.
Mohandas Gandhi, also known as the Mahatma (“Great Soul”), was born on October 2, 1869, in India. He was a leader of the non-violent protest movement and instrumental in achieving India’s eventual independence from Great Britain. Gandhi’s birthday is celebrated as a national holiday in India and, worldwide, as the International Day of Non-Violence.
There will be a meeting to plan themes, topics and guidelines for future Sunday services at 11:00am on Wednesday, October 6th, via Zoom. All BUUFers are invited to join. Please contact Lisa Fuller for a copy of the meeting agenda and Zoom login information.

Please join the upcoming Task Force Meeting to help plan BUUF’s Fall Festival / Trunk-or-Treat. The meeting will take place on Thursday, October 7th at 7:00pm via Zoom. We need your help in planning fun, family-oriented outdoor activities. If you can’t make the meeting, but would like to help set up beforehand, run an activity, donate candy or prizes, etc., please email Joanne at office@berrienuu.org. We want to provide area children, and especially our RE kids., with a safe way to celebrate Halloween, just as we did last year!
