Racial Justice Community Book Read: "How to be an Antiracist" by: Ibram X. Kendi @ Zoom Meeting

For July’s racial justice community book read, we’ll be reading Ibram X. Kendi’s How to be an Antiracist. We’ll be meeting weekly to discuss the reading, four chapters at a time (Thursdays @ 7PM, starting July 9th). Feel free to join in the discussion even if you haven’t read the material. The book is available in hard copy, kindle or as audio file.

“Kendi takes readers through a widening circle of antiracist ideas—from the most basic concepts to visionary possibilities—that will help readers see all forms of racism clearly, understand their poisonous consequences, and work to oppose them in our systems and in ourselves. Kendi weaves an electrifying combination of ethics, history, law, and science with his own personal story of awakening to antiracism. This is an essential work for anyone who wants to go beyond the awareness of racism to the next step: contributing to the formation of a just and equitable society.” -Penguin Random House.

Mindfulness Workshop: "Zen-doodles" @ Zoom Meeting

Zen-doodling is a kind of meditative repetitive drawing. It is self-soothing, simple to do and teaches owning our mistakes by incorporating mistakes into the whole image. You will need: paper and a pen or marker.

Please email: dre@berrienuu.org if you would like to attend or have any questions.

Unprecedented State-Wide “Internet of Spirit” Worship Service @ Zoom Meeting

During COVID, UU Congregations across the state of Michigan (including Berrien UU) have found an opportunity to come together like never before.

Thousands of Unitarian Universalists will meet in cyberspace for online worship on Sunday, July 12th, 2020 at 10:30 AM, hosted by Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Southfield.

Over 20 Michigan Unitarian Universalist congregations have worked together to create a joint worship experience with the theme “What have we discovered about remaining hopeful in the midst of the unknown that we can sustain into the future?” Each congregation is pre-recording an element of the service, including music, readings, and a homily. (Berrien UU is recording the chalice lighting portion of the service, with help from our RE children).

The service will be broadcast via Zoom and streamed on Facebook and YouTube on Sunday morning, July 12th. Zoom meeting details will be sent out to BUUF subscribers in advance of the service.

Following the service, there will be a break-out room coffee hour, randomly assigned so that small groups of people, each from a different area of Michigan, can reflect with each other in an intimate setting.

The offering collected online during the service will go entirely to The Unitarian Universalist Trauma Response Ministry (UUTRM) and Black Lives UU (BLUU). Thank you, Joshua Berg (service coordinator) and Lisa Fuller (BUUF representative)!
