Community Conversations: "Interfaith Activism with Eboo Patel" @ Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

This month for Community Conversations, Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship invites you to join us in learning about Interfaith Activism from the founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core, an international nonprofit building the interfaith youth movement, Eboo Patel. In this 40 minute lecture, Patel will discuss the art and science of interfaith work. He’ll share stories from the frontlines of interfaith activism and bring to life the growing body of research on how faith can be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier. Afterwards we’ll discuss how we can put his ideas into practice. Be sure to bring a young adult, friends in varying faiths, BYOB & potluck snacks. Contact DRE@berrienuu.org with any questions.

Sunday Service: “What I Did Last Summer” @ Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Aug 25 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am
The title of this week’s service is “What I Did Last Summer.”  BUUFers Connie Johnson and June Blackwell will share a bit about their summers.  Connor Johnson will tell the “Story for All Ages.”  The BUUF musicians will perform.  Harvey Johnson will lead us in song.  Jim Dagleish has a special musical  number of his own, and Candace will be at the piano. In his sermon titled: “What I Did Last Summer: Money, Sex, Religion, and Politics,” Rev. Jim McConnell will share a bit about what he accidentally learned about Modern Monetary Theory and the impact monetary policy has on religion and politics.  Perhaps you are wondering what money and politics have to do with spirituality and religion. I invite you to come and find out.  Gandhi said, “Those who do not see the connection between religion and politics, do not understand either.”

Pictured above is Adam Smith, the great 18th century Scottish philosopher of economics whose theories are simple, elegant and Wrong!!  In this week’s sermon we will investigate how adoption of his ideas has negatively impacted the lives of millions of Americans.

Sunday Service: "Blessing of the Backpacks Sunday" @ Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

This Sunday, September 1st, is Blessing of the Backpacks Sunday. We will send our young ones (including college bound) back to school with a blessing of hope and success for them in the upcoming academic year. Katharine Lion and Rev. Jim McConnell will give the blessings and Candace Onweller will be at the piano. Rev. Jim will bring a sermon titled: “What’s in Your Backpack?” in which he will investigate those things that we take with us in our metaphorical backpacks to help us through life’s sometimes difficult and occasionally shattering life experiences. Jim will also be providing the special music.

Make sure your young ones bring their backpacks.  And don’t forget to wear your picnic clothes.  Our annual End-of-Summer Picnic is at Candace’s house following the service.

Note: There will be no BUUF Musicians rehearsal or performance this Sunday.

BUUF End-of-Summer Picnic @ Home of Candace Onweller

Candace Onweller has generously offered to host our End-of-Summer Picnic at her home (1532 Maple Lane, Benton Harbor) on Sunday, September 1st, after service. Candace’s house is about 20 minutes from BUUF. She has a big yard, swimming pool, and plenty of chairs.  BUUFers should bring a dish to pass, beverages of choice, and a swim suit and towel if desired.  Candace will provide disposable plates, napkins and utensils for our meal. A few extra tables would be helpful.

Come join the fun at our annual BUUF Picnic, and celebrate the final days of summer with your fellow BUUFers. This will be a fun event for both adults and children!
