Interfaith Action of Southwest Michigan launched a nine-month program on Migrants and the Theology of Migration in June.

The next session in the series takes place on July 29th at 6pm. BUUFer Dr. Clark Gilpin, Dean Emeritus of the University of Chicago Divinity School, will provide an assessment of the theme of migration in different faith traditions, titled “We Are All Migrants: Stories of Migration, Exile, and Journey in World Religions.”

Dr. Gilpin will explore the striking importance of “the migrant,” “the exile,” and “the refugee” as representations of religious identity in many of the major religious traditions. He will encourage participants to think about their personal religious life as a journey of migration. Thinking of oneself as a migrant-in-this-world sets up a different relationship to “actual” migrants within our community. Dr Gilpin will further explore how this understanding of one’s self as a migrant might impact worship, social activism, and interfaith relations. Following Dr Gilpin’s presentation, responses will be provided by Sondra Levin of Temple B’Nai Shalom, Zahid Saleem of the Islamic Association of SW Michigan and Rev Jeffrey Hubers of First Congregational Church of St Joseph. General discussion will follow.  The program is also sponsored by Berrien Immigrant Solidarity Network.
