Continue discussion of a film series on social justice that we began at our September meeting.
Inform BUUF about the current priorities of Michigan social service organizations and ways that we could support them.
- On October 31, the Social Justice Committee cooperated with the Sunday Service committee to arrange a presentation by Debi VanDenBoom from the Cora Lamping Center for Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence. The Center is currently requesting donations for persons it is assisting, and BUUF could support this effort as a holiday project beginning on Sunday, Dec. 12.
- Carol’s Hope supports persons with substance use disorders,
- Neighbors Organizing Against Racism (Trenton Bowens) intends to create a bail fund.
- Interfaith Action of Southwest Michigan (Sid Mohn).
- Michigan UU Social Justice Network (Randy Block and Sharon Pedersen).
Social justice events planned for early 2022.
- The Race Relations Council is working with Lake Michigan College on the annual Martin Luther King celebration, during the week of January 17, for which the Race Relations Council will organize a panel discussion of Heather McGhee’s book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together.
- The next meeting of Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust (ALPACT) is scheduled for January 25 at 9:30 am. If you wish to receive ALPACT information, email Audrey Lester at audreykl@hotmail.com. Larry Feldman gave an update on how members of the Race Relations Council have been working with the Sheriff’s office to request data on racial disparities in the jail population, bail procedures, and specific criminal charges. The information in being given to Andrews University which is helping to analyze the data.
Lisa Fuller has provided a summary of Sunday service themes for December 2021 and January 2022. Members of the Social Justice Committee are encouraged to offer a 3-to-5-minute social justice message related to these themes.

Since the mental health topics of Jan 2021 were well received, we will repeat that theme in Jan 2022, along with the theme of ‘Intentions.’

BUUF will hold a Silent Auction this Sunday, December 5, and at the Social Justice Committee meeting in January, we will discuss how the auction proceeds can be put to good use. A few volunteers would be helpful.
