We will be meeting and continuing our Housing Accessibility challenge this week at approximately 11:30am following the Sunday service.
Housing accessibility:
Homelessness accounts for 0.2% of the population in the U.S.; that’s about 553,742 people without a place to stay every night. Access to affordable housing is very difficult- there is a shortage of 7 million affordable homes for US families. In addition, not all homes are built for everyone, people have differing needs.
Things to keep in mind when building your town:
- Does everyone have a place to live?
- How do people pay for their housing? Financially, with time or trade?
- How do you make the quality of the housing equitable, meaning the same quality for different abilities to pay.
- Can people in your town lose their housing and if they do, how are they taken care of?
- What kind of housing is offered in your town? Houses, apartments, tents?
- How does the kind of housing reflect your location & climate?
- People’s accessibility differs, how do you account for this? Like some people use wheelchairs, is their home made for their needs?
- How is homelessness and housing accessibility connected to other social issues like mental health, drug addiction, & healthcare needs – how can you address this interconnection?
