Joys and Sorrows

---

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

It's a joy to share information about our new Greeter Ministry. Thanks to Mary Lou Elson's request and Rev. Jim's textile creativity we now have Greeter Stoles (pictured at left)!  Sunday Services Chair Lisa Fuller is working on a Greeter Guide to help folks understand the ministry. If you are interested in serving as a greeter at Sunday Services, please contact Lisa. It is a great way to minister to regular BUUFers and visitors alike, fostering a welcoming and caring atmosphere.

Speaking of the new Greeter Stoles. Rev. Jim McConnell is now selling handcrafted stoles on an Etsy site. According to the site: "Reverend Jim McConnell started sewing in 1975 on a $69 Singer sewing machine. When he was freshly retired, his wife Patty (also a reverend) was diagnosed with breast cancer. While he was hanging around the house with her, he started sewing clerical stoles & purses to pass the time. He feels that making clerical stoles & sewing is a way of mastering his interior life & is thus a spiritual pursuit. He ministers part time for a very small congregation in southwest Michigan. The money he earns selling on Etsy is donated to help maintain the costs of running the fellowship." Thank you, Jim, for working tirelessly for our fellowship in so many ways!

Friends, please spread the word about this site. Jim's stoles are colorful and of high quality. They are largely oriented toward Christian churches and ministers.

To share your joys and sorrows with the larger BUUF community send an email to Office@BerrienUU.org or contact Rev. Jim McConnell at Minister@BerrienUU.org or 574-229-6536.

Sunday Service: "Mr. Rogers, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Harriet Tubman Take a Road Trip in a 1964 Cadillac Coupe DeVille"

December 8, 10:30am - 11:30am

December is a month of wonder at BUUF. In this week’s sermon, “Mr. Rogers, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Harriet Tubman Take a Road Trip in a 1964 Cadillac Coupe DeVille,” Rev. Jim McConnell will examine different ways these three travelers became great heroes of love and faith. We will also have poetry and readings by Julie Williams and Orrin Lorenz and some great music brought to us by our talented BUUF Musicians. Additionally, Terra Rasmussen will bring us the Story for All Ages and Nico Rojas will be our projectionist.

See you Sunday.

Free Film and Non-Partisan Discussion on Michigan Voting Rights

Wednesday, December 4, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Bridgman Public Library

In 2018, Michigan voters approved significant changes to our state’s voting procedures. To better understand these changes, Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is sponsoring a presentation on those changes and screening the short documentary “Suppressed: The Fight To Vote,” to prompt community discussion and learn more about how Michigan’s new procedures may affect every voter in every election.

Documentarian Robert Greenwald’s 37-minute film, released in September 2019, exposes rampant voter suppression that affected the outcome of the 2018 midterm election in Georgia and the threat it poses to elections in 2020.

Voter suppression happens all over the United States and takes many forms. Learn more about these in order to protect your right to vote and learn what Michigan is doing to help protect against voter suppression.

Join this non-partisan community conversation. All are welcome. Bridgman Public Library, 4460 Lake Street, Bridgman, Michigan 49106.

Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen

Saturday, December 7, 9:00am - 1:00pm

Berrien UU Fellowship serves lunch at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen the first Saturday of every even-numbered month (February, April, June, August, October and December). Berrien UU volunteers prepare the meal, greet guests and help clean up the kitchen. This is a terrific opportunity to serve the greater community, support our Social Justice mission and enjoy the company of fellow BUUFers and guests at the kitchen. Rev. Jim McConnell generously leads the group in planning the meal and dessert and he will gladly find a role for all volunteers, whether they’ve helped dozens of times or this is their first time. Please consider coming to the Soup Kitchen to help, even if it’s only for an hour or two.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This month, BUUF's Made with Love Stitchers are invited to visit the soup kitchen and help distribute the knit and crocheted winter outerwear that they made.

The Soup Kitchen is located at 233 Michigan Street in Benton Harbor.
