Joys and Sorrows

---

BUUF member June Blackwell reports enjoying a lovely visit from fellow member Joan Guilfoyle recently. They went to the Tri-State Regatta and the Kee-Boon-Mein-Kaa Pow Wow (Pokagon Band of Potawatomi) celebrating the end of huckleberry season. Joan is now off to Mackinac Island for month, after which we'll hopefully see her back at BUUF! June invites other BUUF members to come by and visit for a few days as well.

We wish all our BUUF children a great start back at school. BUUF members Oliver and Ben are both starting kindergarten!

BUUF board member Diane Gibbons shared what a joy it was to work on a Grand Canyon restoration project this summer.

Lisa Fuller is sad to report she and Jim Fuller are headed to a funeral on Sunday for the tragic death of a member of Jim's family. Our heart goes out to them.

BUUF member David La Fleur is once again starring in a musical at Twin City Players. Mamma Mia runs September 6-29 and is the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father.

To share your joys and sorrows with the larger BUUF community send an email to Office@BerrienUU.org or contact Rev. Jim McConnell at Minister@BerrienUU.org or 574-229-6536.

Sunday Service: “Water Communion”

Sunday Service:
“Water Communion”

September 8,
10:30
am - 11:30am

This Sunday, September 8th, is our annual Water Communion Service. This service is an all ages worship. Katharine Lion and Gretchen Ohmann have created a service flowing with spirit. Rev. Jim McConnell will give a short message on the covenant of communion. Be sure to bring some water that has special meaning for you. Many BUUFers bring water from (or representing) places they have visited over the summer. We will be mingling our individual waters, creating community water that will be used in our gardens and for future blessings.

Before this week’s service is the BUUF Board Meeting at 9 AM, which all members are welcome to attend. There is also a BUUF Musicians rehearsal at 9:30 AM. Following the service at noon is a brainstorming session led by Board Member Diane Gibbons to plan BUUF’s fall and spring gardening projects.

Gardening sessions are each Thursday from 5pm-7pm. Any time is appreciated. Stop by and see Harvey Johnson (269-470-1470), who will try to make it to all sessions. Harvey says it is especially rewarding working with the children and teaching them about harvesting.

Watch the New BUUF Video!

One of BUUF's longtime goals has been to create and share a video about our amazing little fellowship so others can see who we are and what we do (and hopefully be moved to stop by and visit us!) Enter Nico Rojas, BUUF member and creative professional, who worked diligently over many months to create our new video. This is a must watch. Many BUUF members and friends are featured on the video, having fun and sharing what makes BUUF special to them. Eventually the video will be uploaded to our webpage and elsewhere for informational and promotional purposes. For now, you can watch the video on YouTube. Feel free to share, comment, and thank Nico for all his hard work!

Conversations with a Suffragist

BUUF member Gloria Weberg is selling tickets to a special program sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties, in honor of the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote. Tickets to Conversations with a Suffragist are $10, and there are two showings: September 18th at the Vickers Theater and September 19th at the Box Factory for the Arts. "In her one-woman show, Megan Burnett brings to life Mattie Griffith Browne, a 19th century Kentucky suffragist, abolitionist, and author. Born in Owensboro, KY to a slave-holding family, Browne was determined to free the slaves she inherited from her parents. As an adult, she wrote 'Autobiography of a Female Slave' to raise money to free those slaves. She then turned her activism to suffragism and worked to obtain the right to vote for all citizens."
