Joys and Sorrows

---

It's a joy to announce we'll be making some upgrades to BUUF's property this spring!

Many thanks to new BUUF member Sandy Walker, who is donating soil and lumber to make two 4’x8’ raised garden beds at BUUF. Sandy is pictured at right working the soil. There will be a gardening session this Saturday from 1pm -3pm to build the raised beds between the parking lot and the solar panels. Please join if you are willing and able.

Thank you, Rev. Jim McConnell, for measuring and ordering new windows for the fellowship. BUUF is scheduling two volunteer work days (June 1st and June 8th) to prepare for and complete the installation. You can find more details toward the end of this newsletter.

To share your joys and sorrows with the larger BUUF community send an email to Office@BerrienUU.org or contact Rev. Jim McConnell at Minister@BerrienUU.org or 574-229-6536.

Sunday Service: "Happy Birthday, Walt Whitman"

Sunday Service:

"Happy Birthday, Walt Whitman"

Sunday, May 19, 10:30am - 11:30am

This Sunday, May 19th, we celebrate the 200th birthday of the great American poet and essayist Walt Whitman, who is considered one of America’s most influential gay men. Perhaps Whitman’s greatest teaching for us is that we can, in spite of the immensity of life and our own complex, multiple-layered psychologies, embrace life with great joy, and receive from life a bounty of spiritual riches.

Several fellowship members will be contributing to the service. Vanessa Crenshaw will light the Chalice, Gene Ruggless will lead us in our Affirmation, and Julie Williams will talk about what it means to be a “Welcoming Congregation.” Dorothy Long and Sandy Walker will share some of Whitman’s poetry, the BUUF Musicians will share some special music, Harvey Johnson will lead us in song, and Candace Onweller will be accompanying on the piano. For the homily, Rev. Jim McConnell will bring a message titled: “I Stand Before a Million Universes.”

Following the service BUUFers are invited to join the Anniversary Pilgrimage to BUUF's various meeting locations over the years. The pilgrimage leaves BUUF at 12:30 PM following a light lunch. More details can be found later in this newsletter.

Calling All Mowing Volunteers!

Spring is here and BUUF's large lawn is growing quickly. Please help with keeping the lawn trimmed, tidy and inviting to all. We'll soon be posting a sign-up sheet in the kitchen area for interested volunteers. Trimming the lawn is easy and relaxing using BUUF's electric-powered, rechargeable, self-propelled mower. If you're not sure how to work the mower, just ask Harvey Johnson, our Green Sanctuary Committee Chair, for a brief lesson!

New "Closing Checklist"

Many thanks to Dave Sarra, Lisa Fuller and others who assembled a Closing Checklist for BUUFers to use when locking up the building. This checklist has been posted at the doorway. If you are the last one leaving the building, please review the items on the checklist to make sure everything has been addressed. We want to make sure all doors are locked, lights are off, no water or unnecessary appliances are running, and no food has been left out. Please help us keep our building safe and mice-free!

Communications Survey Results

Thank you to everyone who completed the recent BUUF Communications Survey. We received 34 responses that will help us focus more on the types of communication you find most valuable. Here's what you told us:

• The most popular ways you learn about BUUF news are the weekly BUUF Announce, spoken announcements at the Sunday service, the Sunday bulletin, and our Facebook accounts.

• The items you are most interested in hearing about are upcoming events at BUUF and affiliated community organizations, as well as news about BUUF members and friends. Occasional messages from the BUUF President and/or Treasurer were also rated highly. This is something the board will try to accommodate.

• The reported interest level in monthly board meeting and committee reports was very low. Because these take a lot of time to compile and post to our website, we are going to make them available upon request going forward. Please email office@berrienuu.org if you would like a copy of any particular monthly reports and/or a copy of the monthly financial statements.

• There continue to be requests to post either recordings of the Sunday services or written copies of the readings and homily. This is something we are working to accommodate and would welcome any volunteer support toward this goal.

If you haven't yet responded to the survey and would like to share your feedback, please access this link.
