Empowering Survivors, Honoring Strength

This Sunday we welcome a guest speaker from the Cora Lamping Center for Survivors of Domestic Abuse and Violence, brought to us by the BUUF Social Justice Committee and the work of Emilee Avink and Laurie Myer. The Cora Lamping Center offers survivors and their children the essential services they need to build safe, healthy, and meaningful lives through support, advocacy, and empowerment. Survivors are provided with shelter services, a 24-hour helpline, legal advocacy, counseling, support groups, case management, and assistance with basic needs—all designed to help them move forward with strength and dignity. In honor of a woman who stood up when others sat down, the Center embodies the spirit of #CoraStrong. Who was Cora Lamping?
Mrs. Cora Lamping served as Michigan’s second State Superintendent (1906–1913) of our founding organization. At a time when few women were given leadership roles, she pioneered Michigan’s foster care system, ensuring that vulnerable children received individualized care before adoption. The Center bears her name as an inspiration, reminding us of the power of courage, compassion, and advocacy. This special service will also feature a wonderful “Story for All Ages” by DRE Rachel Reed and beautiful music from our BUUF musicians. Don’t miss this meaningful gathering—join us in person or on Zoom as we come together to learn, reflect, and stand in solidarity with survivors. See you Sunday!
Melanie Hooker is the Executive Director for the DVC in Van Buren county Michigan and the Director for the Empowerment Center in Berrien County. Starting in 2009, she was a victim advocate assisting victims of domestic violence. Upon becoming director in 2015, she expanded services to include sexual assault, human trafficking, stalking, dating violence, DV Offender programing, substance abuse programs, migrant outreach, emergency response teams, LGBTQ+ services, and teen victims of witnessed violence.
Melanie is the chair of the Local planning body of the continuum of care for van buren and cass county, sits on the dv task force for Kalamazoo and Allegan counties, collaborated to start a task force in Van Buren Co, is a SAS advisory board member, veteran services stand down organizer, and member of both Allegan and Van Buren counties’ victims services unit. In August of 2023, Melanie and her staff attended a round table with attorney general Nessel to discuss address confidentiality and the extreme risk protection orders. Melanie became a certified address confidentiality assistance in October 2023. Melanie is an Expert Witness for Michigan in Domestic Violence, Stalking, and Strangulation. In October of 2024, she was asked to consult in Berrien county’s DV shelter, and became the director in November. The Empowerment Center is a 23 bed domestic violence shelter that houses victims of intimate partner violence and their children. In addition, EC provides free licensed therapy, emergency response, protection order assistance, safety planning, support groups, transportation, and case management.

And Roses Too: A Reflection on International Women’s Day, by Lynn Thompson

It is a joke in my household that I tend to assign myself homework. I love writing essays, and sometimes I go way too far with it. I recently finished a 5,000 word essay on the Naomi Novik book Spinning Silver. It took me three years. I told Jim I wanted to do a sermon today way back on January …

DATES HAVE CHANGED

Click here to participate. There are still dates available. This is the way to support Patrice when she comes back from surgery in early March. Even though it is organized through MealTrain, this is for visiting and doing some light chores for Patrice as she recovers.
Thank you to everyone who is participating!
