BUUF Brunch

Please join us for either our BUUF Brunch, Wednesday, November 8, from 11 AM to 1 PM, or our Creative Conversations, Wednesday, November 15, from 7-9 PM, as we tackle the topic of whether there is Truth (with a capital “T”) and/or an objective reality we can all agree on.

For both get-togethers we’ll watch Michael Patrick Lynch’s How to see past your own perspective and find truth which is described as follows: “The more we read and watch online, the harder it becomes to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s fake. It’s as if we know more but understand less, says philosopher Michael Patrick Lynch. In this talk, he dares us to take active steps to burst our filter bubbles and participate in the common reality that actually underpins everything.”

That TedTalk will be coupled with How to seek truth in the era of fake news which is described as follows: “Known worldwide for her courage and clarity, Christiane Amanpour has spent the past three decades interviewing business, cultural and political leaders who have shaped history. In conversation with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Amanpour discusses fake news, objectivity in journalism, the leadership vacuum in global politics and more, sharing her wisdom along the way. ‘Be careful where you get information from,’ she says. ‘Unless we are all engaged as global citizens who appreciate the truth, who understand science, empirical evidence and facts, then we are going to be wandering around — to a potential catastrophe.’”

Is it possible for us, as a nation, to give up our individual origin myths and find consensus in our history and present state of affairs? Please join us and participate in the discussion!
