In October 2015, BUUF had Four Elements Energy of Lawrence Michigan install a 6-kilowatt (kW) solar electric generating system in our backyard (see photo below).buuf solar The system consists of 20 panels each capable of converting sun energy (photons) into 300 watts of electron energy. A grand total of 6000 watts (6 kW) of energy generated each second, each minute, each hour that strong sun is shining on the polycrystalline silicon panels. Electrical energy is sold in units of kilowatt/hours (kWh). The system is connected to the local electrical utility grid (Indiana Michigan Power). Net metering laws require IMP to purchase our generated electricity and pay the “net” of electricity used – electricity generated. During the summer months with strong sun, BUUF had account credits and no payment due.

During the 12 months prior to the installation, we spent $1038 on electricity. After the solar system was installed, we spent $391 in the subsequent 12 months. A $647 savings. A 62% reduction in annual electricity expenses that will continue for several decades. The panels and inverter have a 2energy and power chart0-year warranty. Since commissioning the system, it is estimated that BUUF has avoided creating approximately 6 tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) compared with burning non-renewable fossil fuels [carbon (C)]. Using endless renewable solar energy is one way BUUF is working to create a sustainable future.
