Senior BrunchNew60minutes

What determines which of us will make it past 90? What kind of shape we’ll be in if we do? What can we do to up our odds? No matter how old you are, please join us at BUUF for a potluck Senior Brunch from 11am-1pm on Wednesday, May 18, as we watch an episode from 60 Minutes on Aging to 90-Plus and learn about some ideas which may seem counter-intuitive.

Creative Conversations

This month our Creative Conversations gathering will return to one of Krista Tippett’s Speaking of Faith/On Being radio programs titled The Intelligence in All Kinds of Life. If you have an interest in linguistics (differences between Algonquian-based and English languages), sustainability (and our Green Sanctuary movement), or the interconnectedness of all life – this program is for you! Please join us at BUUF on Wednesday, May 18, from 7-9 PM for some light refreshments and deep conversation.

“Why is the world so beautiful?” This is a question Robin Wall Kimmerer pursues as a botanist and also as a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She writes, “Science polishes the gift of seeing, indigenous traditions work with gifts of listening and language.” An expert in moss — a bryologist — she describes mosses as the “coral reefs of the forest.” Her work opens a sense of wonder and humility for the intelligence in all kinds of life we are used to naming and imagining as “inanimate.” She says that as our knowledge about plant life unfolds, human vocabulary and imaginations must adapt.

Robin Wall Kimmerer is the State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse. She is founding director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. Her books include Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses and Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants.

Volunteers are needed to present/lead for SUMMER BUUF Sunday Services. Our summer services are more informal, often in a circle and without music accompanist.  All topics are encouraged that tie to our 7 Principals and are respectful of others.  A sign-up schedule will be posted in the Fuller Fellowship Hall.

*There will be no service on Labor Day weekend Sunday, Sept. 4.

If you have any questions, please contact a Sunday Service Committee Member (Dennis, Renee, Harvey, Julie).

Volunteers are also needed to mow BUUF’s grass with our new, state-of-the-art,solar powered electric mower! What a treat! A sign up sheet will be posted in the Fuller Fellowship Hall for those willing to donate an hour (the battery only lasts that long) of their time to mow our grounds.
